Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described the deadly shooting at Sydney’s Bondi Beach as “an act of pure evil” following the tragic incident that claimed 15 lives during a Hanukkah celebration. The prime minister visited the scene on Monday, laying flowers at the Bondi Pavilion entrance while the nation mourned with flags flying at half-mast.
The attack unfolded on Sunday evening at one of Australia’s most beloved coastal locations, where approximately 1,000 people had gathered for a Jewish holiday event in a small park near the beach. Witnesses described approximately ten minutes of terror as attendees scattered across the sand and into nearby streets, fleeing the gunfire that shattered what should have been a peaceful celebration.
Authorities identified the attackers as a father-son pair who specifically targeted the Jewish gathering. The elder shooter, 50-year-old Sajid Akram, was fatally shot by security forces at the scene, bringing the total death toll to 16. His 24-year-old son, Naveed Akram, sustained critical injuries and remained hospitalized under police guard as investigators worked to understand the full scope of the attack.
The attack left forty people requiring hospital treatment, including two police officers listed in serious but stable condition. Victims ranged dramatically in age from just 10 years old to 87, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of the violence against families celebrating together. Among those injured was 43-year-old fruit shop owner Ahmed al Ahmed, who courageously wrestled a weapon from one of the attackers despite suffering gunshot wounds to his arm and hand that required surgical intervention.
Officials have characterized this incident as the worst gun violence Australia has experienced in nearly three decades, marking a dark moment for a nation that has largely avoided such tragedies. Albanese emphasized that the iconic beach location, typically associated with joy and family gatherings, had become the site of a targeted antisemitic terrorist attack. The deliberate nature of targeting a religious celebration during the hot summer evening when the beach was packed with visitors has sent shockwaves throughout the country and raised concerns about community safety.
