Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that Ukraine did not receive any advance warning from international allies prior to a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, which resulted in significant damage to civilian infrastructure. During Monday’s attack, five missiles struck civilian targets, highlighting the severity of the incident. Zelenskyy emphasized the crucial role of timely intelligence sharing in safeguarding lives, noting that early alerts about missile launches enable civilians and emergency services to brace for incoming threats.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha acknowledged that intelligence cooperation with international partners persists, suggesting that the lack of warning might relate to the specific type of Russian weaponry employed in the attack. This incident occurs amid concerns over potential changes in US intelligence support for Ukraine, as American officials have reportedly cautioned their Ukrainian counterparts about the Trump administration’s consideration of suspending intelligence sharing. Despite this, Ukrainian officials continue to underscore the importance of such cooperation, especially for detecting ballistic missile launches and monitoring long-range bomber activities.
Tensions have further escalated around attacks targeting energy infrastructure. US President Donald Trump has implored Ukraine to cease strikes on Russian oil refineries and announced an agreement with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding diesel supplies. Trump also mentioned that Russia and Ukraine had reached an energy ceasefire, though Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had not received confirmation of such an agreement. Zelenskyy criticized Russia for persisting with attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities despite the alleged ceasefire, asserting that Ukraine had temporarily halted strikes on Russian energy infrastructure following the US announcement. He stressed that any suspension of attacks must be reciprocal and come with credible assurances.
Meanwhile, Russian strikes have continued to inflict casualties and destruction across Ukraine. In a separate incident in Kharkiv, Zelenskyy reported that four people were killed and 41 injured after a residential building was demolished. In response to the intensifying Russian assaults on cities and energy infrastructure, Ukraine has appealed to its partners for additional air-defense support, including the provision of Patriot missile systems, as the country braces for increased hostilities ahead of winter.
