Israel has reportedly pulled back from certain regions of southern Lebanon that it had occupied amid its conflict with Hezbollah, according to a statement from a US State Department official. This development is being hailed as a constructive step towards easing the ongoing tensions in the area.
The US official emphasized that it is now crucial for Lebanon’s armed forces to assume control over these areas. This involves the dismantling of weapons and military infrastructure associated with armed groups. Such actions could pave the way for the return of displaced families, facilitate rebuilding efforts, and reinforce Lebanese sovereignty, the official added.
This announcement coincides with ongoing US-mediated discussions between Israel and Lebanon aimed at reducing border clashes and bolstering security. These talks are also a part of a larger regional initiative addressing the strained relations between Israel and Iran.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, Lebanese security officials have stated that they have not observed any Israeli withdrawal from the designated buffer zone in southern Lebanon. As of now, Israel has not issued any comments on the reported pullback.
The US official did not disclose specific details regarding the locations or the extent of the areas from which Israeli forces are said to have withdrawn.
