Spotify is set to implement new measures aimed at identifying and limiting the prominence of AI-generated artists on its platform. Starting in September, the music streaming service will introduce an “AI persona” label for artists and tracks created by artificial intelligence. This label will be visible on both artist profiles and track listings.
These AI personas will not be included in personalized recommendations by default, a strategy designed to help users differentiate between human musicians and AI-generated entities. This move seeks to protect genuine artists from being overshadowed by AI-created content and to maintain a fair exposure landscape for real musicians.
While Spotify is allowing artists to voluntarily declare if their identities are AI-generated, the company is also employing human reviewers and AI-powered tools to detect AI personas that have not been disclosed. This proactive approach comes in response to the rapid increase in AI-generated music, highlighting Spotify’s commitment to maintaining clarity and transparency on its platform.
The company previously revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, underscoring the significant influx of artificial and low-quality content infiltrating music platforms. As generative AI continues to play a larger role in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing importance of transparency. Listeners are increasingly curious about whether the artists behind the music they enjoy are human or AI-generated, and Spotify’s new measures reflect this evolving demand.
