A recent gathering in Ljubljana offered a platform for discussing national legislation, capacity-building programs, and pressing issues related to chemical safety and international cooperation. This two-day event united 18 representatives from OPCW National Authorities across Eastern European Member States to address the practical challenges and share best practices for implementing the Chemical Weapons Convention, aiming to enhance regional collaboration.
The program featured country presentations, a comprehensive overview of the OPCW’s activities, and discussions on current issues and challenges. Particularly, it emphasized the impact of artificial intelligence and academia’s role in ensuring chemical safety and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. Slovenia, known for its active cooperation with the OPCW, consistently implements the Chemical Weapons Convention, which bans the development, production, stockpiling, and use of chemical weapons, mandating their destruction under international oversight.
With 193 States Parties, the Convention stands as a highly successful and widely ratified treaty. In Slovenia, the Chemicals Office oversees its national implementation, supervising industrial activities involving strategic chemicals and collaborating with the OPCW for international inspections. On May 12, Slovenia joined the OPCW Executive Council, the organization’s governing body tasked with promoting compliance with the Convention. Over its two-year term, Slovenia aims to prevent the proliferation of chemical weapons while bolstering trust and security within the international community.
During the opening remarks at the OPCW Regional Meeting, Boštjan Peršin from the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs highlighted Slovenia’s commitment to supporting new technologies’ development and the peaceful and safe use of chemistry as priorities on the Executive Council. Slovenia’s collaboration with the OPCW, including co-organizing the current regional meeting, underscores its dedication to maintaining high standards of chemical safety, transparency, and the responsible use of chemicals for peaceful purposes.
