Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are investing $3 million to advance sustainable mining practices in Kazakhstan’s rare metals and rare earth minerals sector. This initiative, launched on October 30, aims to enhance environmental regulations, implement advanced green technologies, and establish digital monitoring systems.
The project is a collaboration between the UNDP and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Construction, with financial backing from Japan. As Kazakhstan has identified over 120 deposits of rare metals and rare earth minerals, the initiative seeks to align their extraction and processing with international environmental standards, crucial as global demand for these critical minerals rises.
One of the primary goals of the project is to identify environmental risks early, prevent pollution, and strengthen monitoring before large-scale mining operations commence. The Ministry of Industry and Construction in Kazakhstan has expressed that this partnership will facilitate the integration of modern green technologies and adherence to international environmental standards in the country’s mineral production sector.
Japan reaffirms its commitment to this initiative as part of its broader strategy to promote green development and enhance regional resilience in Central Asia. The partnership strives to ensure responsible mining that protects local communities and ecosystems, while enabling Kazakhstan to leverage the increasing global demand for critical minerals.
