Meta Platforms has swiftly pulled its Muse Image AI feature from service just days after its introduction, following a backlash over privacy issues and its use of public Instagram content. The feature, designed to generate and edit images using AI, was launched earlier this week but quickly met with significant criticism.
Integrated into Meta AI, the Muse Image AI allowed users to manipulate AI-generated images by utilizing publicly available Instagram photos through sketches and photo-based prompts. However, the feature was automatically enabled for eligible users, leading to concerns regarding user consent and the ethical use of public images in AI processes.
Critics, including the entertainment industry union SAG-AFTRA and various public figures, demanded the withdrawal of the feature. They argued that individuals should have the option to opt in before their content is utilized in such a manner. The controversy underscored the sensitivity around consent and the use of personal content in AI technologies.
In response to the backlash, Meta acknowledged that the feature did not align with user expectations and confirmed its removal. The company explained that its intention was to provide a creative tool that also respected user control over their public content. However, the swift decision to discontinue the feature reflects the increasing pressure on technology firms to ensure transparent consent practices and uphold robust privacy protections for AI-driven functionalities.
